This week — what changed
- Washington said the European Union joined its Iran sanctions campaign and Brussels' own text does not say that, a gap the EU declined to close when asked. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the EU had "officially joined" Operation Economic Outcast — the US campaign running since 08-24 — and called the bloc's stance "strong and early." The European Commission's statement says it "welcomes efforts at ensuring that Iran ceases its destabilising activities... including through the US-led Operation Economic Outcast," which is an endorsement of someone else's campaign: no new sanctions, no alignment with US designations, no change to the EU's own Iran regime. Real participation would require member states to adopt equivalent measures and expose European firms to secondary-sanctions exposure, needing unanimity nobody has sought. Asked at the midday briefing on 09-04 whether it accepted the "joined" characterisation, a Commission spokesperson pointed back to the 09-01 statement and neither confirmed nor denied it. What the EU statement does newly do is name Iran's military support for Russia's war in Ukraine alongside the nuclear and ballistic-missile programmes and domestic repression — the Iran and Ukraine files argued as one rationale rather than two. - The AfD won Saxony-Anhalt's state election on Sunday with about 45% of the vote — its best result in any state election and the first time a party classified by Germany's domestic intelligence as confirmed right-wing extremist has come within a few seats of governing a state alone — with the CDU halved to 16-18% and turnout up from 60.3% to 70.4%. The returning officer's count at 21:06 CEST, 2,180 of 2,660 precincts: AfD 45.6, CDU 16.5, SPD 8.9, Greens 8.8, Linke 8.3, BSW 5.2, FDP 2.5; infratest dimap's 20:32 projection 44.2 / 18.0 / 9.0 / 8.6 / 9.0 / 5.1 / 2.3. Seat projections put the AfD at 39-41 of 83, one to three short of the 42 for an absolute majority, and whether it gets there turns on the BSW's 5% threshold. Co-leader Tino Chrupalla claimed a "clear mandate to govern" and named lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund the next premier; Siegmund ruled out minority-government arrangements and the BSW; the BSW's Claudia Wittig called excluding the AfD "completely undemocratic" but rejected both Siegmund and CDU premier Sven Schulze; the Linke's Heidi Reichinnek ruled out any cooperation; a CDU-led minority government reliant on the Linke, the Thuringia and Saxony model, is what tagesschau's coalition calculator leaves. The current CDU-SPD-FDP coalition cannot continue. DW's fact-checkers logged two Russian disinformation campaigns (Matryoshka, Storm-1516) fabricating fraud claims around the vote. The vorläufiges Endergebnis was not complete at this cut; the ledger item resolves on the count and the projections, which agree on first place by more than 25 points. No thread holds German domestic politics. (Landeswahlleiterin — live count, tagesschau — Hochrechnung, DW live, Bloomberg)
