SK Hynix, fresh off its own Nasdaq listing, opens talks with Intel about manufacturing memory chips on US soil for the first time

What happened

SK Hynix confirmed it is in discussions with Intel about producing RAM chips in the United States for the first time — either leasing space at Intel's planned Ohio fab or forming a joint venture, potentially with cloud-service providers involved — though SK Hynix says "no specific plans or arrangements have been finalized at this time." Which memory product line would move to the US is unspecified; it comes as SK Hynix is already building a separate $3.8bn advanced-packaging plant in Indiana for AI chips (mass production targeted 2029) and follows the Trump administration's push for domestic chip production plus tariff-relief incentives amid the ongoing shortage this thread tracks. Context worth noting: SK Hynix bought Intel's NAND business for $9bn in 2020, so a new joint arrangement would reverse that direction of consolidation. ⚠️ Preliminary and unconfirmed by either company beyond the fact that talks are happening; Seoul may also review any deal involving strategically sensitive chip technology. Credibility ratings combine two public datasets: Lin et al. 2023, PNAS Nexus 2(9):pgad286 (CC BY 4.0) for the domain-quality score, and Wikipedia's perennial-sources list (CC BY-SA 4.0) for the reliability tier. A rating describes an outlet's general record, never this particular article. Unrated means absent from those datasets — not a judgement.
