Beijing declines to confirm the truce extension or the AI incident-notification line

What happened

China's Foreign Ministry declined on 09-24 to confirm either the US-announced extension of the trade truce to January 10 or an agreed AI incident-notification channel, referring both questions to "competent authorities." Spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters that China had already released a readout of the economic and trade consultations and pointed to it, while saying the two presidents are "in communication regarding interactions within the year"; the state visit's talks and a state dinner with US executives were still to come. Xi Jinping arrived at the White House shortly after 10am ET for the state arrival ceremony, with the Oval Office meeting scheduled for 11:30am and no outcome on chips, export controls or the AI incident channel announced by then. Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Qualcomm's Cristiano Amon and OpenAI's Sam Altman are due at Thursday's state dinner, per CBS, while CNBC reports Xi's own business delegation did not materialise; China analysts quoted by CNBC expect few major deliverables. Trump and Xi held roughly 90 minutes of talks in the Oval Office on Thursday, and by about 3pm ET no joint statement, fact sheet or White House readout had been published. Trump told reporters only "We had a great meeting" and ignored shouted questions on Taiwan, AI and Jimmy Lai; Xi left about 1:30pm ET and is due back at 6:45pm for the state dinner, and the schedule had no joint news conference. Reuters-based pre-meeting reporting expected separate national announcements rather than a joint text. (AP via Local10, CNN live updates, Nikkei Asia live blog)
Xinhua's excerpts of Xi's words to Trump cover the "constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability," Taiwan and Iran, and say nothing about tariffs, chips, export controls or an AI incident-notification line. Xi told Trump "we hope the US side will uphold the correct position of opposing 'Taiwan independence'" and that the relationship "is neither an expedient measure nor something that can be achieved overnight"; the excerpts were published between about 12:45pm and 1:20pm ET and Xinhua's fuller readout had not yet appeared. Xi told the White House arrival ceremony he hopes "Chinese companies are treated fairly here in the United States" and proposed that the two militaries "improve mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention," without naming chips or export controls. He also said China is willing to strengthen counternarcotics and law-enforcement cooperation, offered more direct flights, invited 100,000 young Americans to China over five years and said two pandas reach Zoo Atlanta "in a few days." China's Foreign Ministry published its official readout of Thursday's 90-minute Oval Office talks, the only documentary account of the meeting from either government: the trade teams "reached a new joint arrangement" with no date given, the two leaders agreed to "continue their dialogue on AI" and keep it "under human control," and Xi restated his position that the US should "adhere to the correct position of opposing 'Taiwan independence.'" The two leaders also exchanged views on the Middle East, Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula, and agreed to support each other's hosting of the 2026 APEC summit and the G20; no White House readout, fact sheet or joint statement existed as of Friday 10:15am ET. Thursday's state dinner drew Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Apple's Tim Cook, OpenAI's Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sundar Pichai, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Tesla's Elon Musk and AMD's Lisa Su, seated with the two presidential couples — no Anthropic executive appeared on the released guest list, and no Chinese business leader attended. Both leaders' dinner toasts were purely ceremonial (a gift of a bald-eagle statue from Trump, a Mid-Autumn Festival greeting from Xi), with no policy content in either. Credibility ratings combine two public datasets: Lin et al. 2023, PNAS Nexus 2(9):pgad286 (CC BY 4.0) for the domain-quality score, and Wikipedia's perennial-sources list (CC BY-SA 4.0) for the reliability tier. A rating describes an outlet's general record, never this particular article. Unrated means absent from those datasets — not a judgement.
