What happened

OpenAI added Paul Christiano — the alignment researcher who founded the Alignment Research Center and popularized "AI safety via debate" — to the OpenAI Foundation board, seated on its Safety and Security Committee, per OpenAI's own announcement. Christiano is on record saying "I now believe there is a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control" and, pointedly, "I do not think that the AI industry in general, including OpenAI, is currently on track to reduce this risk" — a sitting board member publicly contradicting his own company's safety framing.
