The first named, costed Genesis Mission award: $11.5M for a Brookhaven-led grid foundation model

What happened

The Energy Department's Office of Electricity announced an $11.5 million research project led by Brookhaven National Laboratory under the Genesis Mission umbrella, building "GridFM" — an AI foundation model intended to simulate on the order of a billion grid-expansion scenarios within 24 hours — with Stony Brook University, the New York Power Authority, LIPA, National Grid and NYSERDA as collaborators. This thread has been long on programme rhetoric and short on money actually attached to a named deliverable; this is the first award on its record with an agency, a dollar figure and a lab attached to it. ⚠️ The figure is DOE's own ($11.5M) — a secondary count of $14.2M circulated and does not match the department's release. Credibility ratings combine two public datasets: Lin et al. 2023, PNAS Nexus 2(9):pgad286 (CC BY 4.0) for the domain-quality score, and Wikipedia's perennial-sources list (CC BY-SA 4.0) for the reliability tier. A rating describes an outlet's general record, never this particular article. Unrated means absent from those datasets — not a judgement.
