Google funds 96MW of Georgia nuclear uprates; Kairos gets a $100M Samsung C&T commitment

What happened

Google agreed to fund uprates at Georgia Power's Vogtle and Hatch nuclear plants that would add about 96MW of capacity, under a new subscription tariff that gives Google the plants' zero-emission credits Georgia Power says the arrangement (the NU-1 tariff, filed 09-21 in Georgia PSC dockets 44280 and 56002 along with a request for a new extended power uprate at Hatch units 1 and 2) will bring about $900M in benefits to customers over the units' lives and shields non-participating customers from the uprate cost; it needs Georgia Public Service Commission approval. The Vogtle units 1 and 2 uprate was already approved in the utility's 2025 resource plan. (Georgia Power/PR Newswire, POWER)
Kairos Power signed a binding term sheet under which Samsung C&T will provide up to $100M in investment and in-kind engineering to help deliver Hermes 2, the 50MW reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee that will supply Google through the Tennessee Valley Authority Samsung C&T also joins Kairos's engineering-procurement-construction team, initially on power-generation systems and balance of plant; the deal is subject to regulatory approvals and builds on an 08-18 memorandum with Barnard Construction. The plant, one of the first Generation IV reactors planned in the US, is slated for completion by 2030. (Kairos Power, DCD)

Credibility ratings combine two public datasets: Lin et al. 2023, PNAS Nexus 2(9):pgad286 (CC BY 4.0) for the domain-quality score, and Wikipedia's perennial-sources list (CC BY-SA 4.0) for the reliability tier. A rating describes an outlet's general record, never this particular article. Unrated means absent from those datasets — not a judgement.
