OpenAI disclosed a $1bn annualized run rate for ChatGPT Ads in under 200 days from launch, the first hard revenue figure it has attached to the business. The post says the platform is used by "tens of thousands of advertisers," is live in
over 40 countries, and that self-service buying through Ads Manager opens today across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It frames advertising as one pillar of a "diversified business model" alongside subscriptions, enterprise and usage-based APIs, supporting an ad-supported free tier for
more than 1 billion weekly active users. The disclosed mechanism matters as much as the figure: ads are targeted on "the context of the current conversation" and, "depending on the country and a user's settings," on context from the user's broader ChatGPT history. Stated guardrails are that ads are labelled and separated from answers, that advertising does not influence answers, and that advertisers get no access to private conversations. ⚠️
An annualized run rate is a point-in-time extrapolation, not booked revenue, and no comparison against total revenue or losses was given. (
